THE SACRIFICIAL COCK (ADIE IRANA)

Living in some parts of Nigeria has few perks. One I am not in a hurry to forget is what I experienced in Osun State when I went for further studies at the Blue room. You know how it is when you suddenly find yourself in a suburb of a very small town in the western part of Nigeria. The feeling is something else, especially when you just migrated from a place like Lagos. Is it the peace that emanates from the surrounding or the fresh cool air that goes into your nostrils and moves over your skin caressingly or the extremely cheap transport fare? This is a place where neighbors sleep as early as 7pm! I mean, who does that in Lagos?

This fateful morning, I woke up to an unusual noise of a bell and something close to ‘morning cry’. Only that the morning cry was ‘a morning dissemination of curses’. E gba mi! I quickly sat up in my apartment, rushed to the window to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating. That confirmed, I settled more to listen very well to the ‘cry’. Dear Diary, you wouldn’t believe the reason for the ‘cry’. Her chicks/hens/cocks (whichever one) had been stolen and the next thing she could do was to go around the area, cursing with a bell meant for the gospel. I am yet to get the meaning of the curses but she said and I quote: ‘Iwo to gbe mi ni adie, oo ni ri adie irana o’.

I wonder how this method of vengeance had ever worked for her. but obviously, it had, because she did it with passion and so much belief. The only confusing part is that she is supposedly a ‘Christian’. Yes, I get it…whatever was stolen could be a means of feeding for her and family since they hadnt been paid for months as a civil servant but I think that was to the extreme.

This is similar to us all. As who we confess to be, there should be a limit to our reactions. The limiting question is ‘ What would Jesus do?’. The The Bible already says it all… ‘ . ‘Vengeance is mine, says The Lord of Hosts’. And to all who are prone and adamant to making others cry, you don’t know what you might have just attracted into your life. Beware!

I will appreciate anyone who can shed more light on the meaning in the comment box, especially the english translation of Adie irana, please.
